Travel Information & Suggestions

Flights

We recommend flying into Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT), the closest airport to Yosemite National Park, located about 2.5 hours from Yosemite Valley. Some flights may require a connection to reach Fresno. Alternatively, San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is another option, though it’s approximately a 4-hour drive to Yosemite Valley. We suggest planning your arrival for the day before your trip to allow for ample preparation and travel time. All trips will end by 5pm, so we suggest planning your return flight accordingly.

Hotels

If you’re planning to stay in Fresno before your trip, both the Wyndham Garden Fresno and Best Western offer convenient locations close to the airport. For any last-minute gear, there’s an REI just 15 minutes away, along with a variety of dining options nearby. We highly recommend Heirloom as a favorite spot to eat!

If you’d prefer to stay within Yosemite National Park the night before, Curry Village Canvas Tents provide an affordable option. While they’re not the most luxurious, they offer on-site showers and easy access to the heart of the park.

Transportation

We strongly recommend renting a car for this adventure. If possible, consider carpooling with other participants to help reduce individual rental costs.

Park Reservations

During peak season (May–October), Yosemite National Park requires entrance reservations. However, by booking with Sierra Soul Adventures, no additional reservation is needed to access the park. Your permit confirmation, which we provide prior to your trip, serves as your entry pass—just show it to the park entrance ranger. For more details about entrance reservations, please refer to the official guidelines here.

Meeting Locations

Backpacking Trips: Backpackers Campground is conveniently located within Yosemite National Park, behind North Pines Campground in Yosemite Valley. Here’s a step-by-step guide to reach the campground:

  1. Enter Yosemite Valley: Follow signs toward Curry Village and North Pines Campground.

  2. Parking: When you arrive at North Pines Campground, you may use the 20-minute loading zone to drop off your belongings at the campsite. After unloading, please move your vehicle to the nearby lot at Curry Village gravel parking lot or parallel park along the main road. Parking is limited, especially during peak season, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot. You do not need a vehicle parking pass to park overnight.

  3. Walking Directions: From the North Pines Campground parking area, follow signs directing you toward the Backpackers Campground, which is just a short walk away, past the main campground area. As you walk, keep an eye out for signs to ensure you’re on the right path. You’ll also cross a bridge over the river, which confirms you’re heading in the right direction toward the Backpackers Campground.

  4. Check-In Process: Rachel and Garet will be on-site by 3 p.m. on the first day to set up the campsite. Please refrain from starting your own setup until you’ve checked in with us. We’ll cover the cost of the campground stay. To ensure everything goes smoothly, please aim to arrive by 4 p.m. on your orientation day.

Day Hikes: Meeting locations will vary based on the hike, and detailed instructions will be provided in advance to ensure you have all the information you need.

Rock Climbing: Meeting locations will vary based on the climb, and detailed instructions will be provided in advance to ensure you have all the information you need.

Gear Rentals

To determine what’s included in your trip and what’s not, please check the gear list at the end of each trip page. If you need gear rentals, REI provides a wide range of affordable options, and Sierra Soul Adventures may also offer a limited selection for rent. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out—we're here to help!

Trip Insurance

We highly recommend that all guests consider purchasing trip insurance for their upcoming backpacking adventure. Travel insurance can provide peace of mind by protecting against unforeseen events, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. It’s especially important to ensure that your policy specifically covers activities like backpacking, as some plans may exclude certain adventure sports or outdoor activities. Please take the time to carefully review your insurance options and confirm that backpacking is included in your coverage, so you're fully protected during your trip.

For those seeking reliable trip insurance, here are a few reputable providers to consider:

  • Allianz Travel: A well-established provider with customizable plans that can include hiking and other adventure activities.

  • Travelex Insurance: Offers coverage options that include trip interruption, medical expenses, and emergency evacuation.

  • World Nomads: Known for offering comprehensive coverage for outdoor and adventure travelers.

  • Travel Guard: Offers a wide range of policies, including medical and emergency evacuation coverage.

We encourage you to compare plans and select the one that best fits your needs.
